Year over Year Growth (YoY Growth)
print icon

Definition: Percent growth between two years, usually present year to past year.

Equation: (present year's metric - last year's metric)/last year's metric

Example: This measure is used in a lot of different places and can be used on most metrics,  it can get kind of confusing when using it on percentages, don't recommend it.

A retailer can easily look at year over growth metric, like the example below looking at YTD for the present year and YTD from last year and the dot being year over year growth. If the dot is below the thicker dark line (0%), that means that the category did not exceed sales from the prior year and if the dot is above the thicker black line, it has exceeded its sales from last year.
